How To Do A Pilates Plank Correctly (And Why Most People Do It Wrong)

Everyone who does Pilates knows about the plank, but most do it wrong.

Most people hold it.

Most people rush through it.

Most people miss the point completely.

A proper plank builds a stronger core, better posture, and real results.

But only if you do it right.

If you want to learn the difference for yourself, you can start with a FREE 7-day trial of The MOTHR Method.

What the Plank Is Actually Training

We are not just talking about abs. We are talking about your core as a system.

Your deep abs, your glutes, your shoulders, and your stabilizers.

Everything works together.

A strong core supports how you stand, how you move, and how you carry yourself.

It shows up in your posture.

It shows up in your strength.

It shows up in your body.

The Biggest Mistake I See in Class

I see hips too low.

Lower back taking over.

When your hips drop, you are no longer in your core. You are dumping into your lower back.

Low hips put pressure on your lower back, reduce core engagement, and can lead to pain.

It might feel like you are working harder. You are not.

You are just putting strain where it does not belong.

This is something you need to fix if you want real results.

What a Proper Plank Actually Looks Like

This is how you do a proper plank:

  • Core braced.

  • Ribs pulled in.

  • Glutes engaged.

  • Hips slightly lifted, not sagging.

  • Neck long.

  • Armpits directly angled over the hands.

You should feel your entire core working. Not just your shoulders. Not your lower back.

Static Plank vs Dynamic Plank

Holding a plank has its place. But it is not enough.

At MOTHR, we do not just hold a plank. We move through it.

Movement keeps your muscles under tension longer. Movement increases intensity.

Movement delivers results faster. This is where it changes.

This Is How We Train in The Mothr Method

We use a plank as a working position, not a resting one.

We include shoulder taps, plank to pike, knee drives, hip dips, controlled transitions, planks with weights and forearm planks with movement.

High reps. Minimal rest. Continuous tension.

That is HOW you build strength.

What This Actually Does for Your Body

When the plank is done properly, it delivers.

  • A flatter lower belly.

  • A stronger, more stable core.

  • Better posture.

  • Reduced back pain.

  • More defined arms and shoulders.

Not from holding longer. From working harder.

If You Feel This, Fix It

Pay attention to what your body is telling you.

  • Lower back pain.

  • Your hips are too low.

  • Neck strain & if your head is dropping.

  • Only feeling your shoulders.

  • Your core is not engaged enough.

If you feel any of these, adjust, reset, and continue. Form first. Then intensity.

This Is How We Train at MOTHR

This is not random Pilates. This is a method:

High reps. Compound moves. Minimal rest. Time under tension.

We train your muscles close to fatigue, and then push a little further.

That is how bodies change.

If you want to feel the difference for yourself, you can start with a FREE 7-day trial of The MOTHR Method.
