Time Under Tension: Why Your Workouts Aren’t Working.

How to build real strength without lifting heavy.

If you’ve been to any of my Pilates classes, you’ve likely heard me say Pilates is strength training. (When done properly.)

Not soft movement, not just stretching, not just flexibility or posture, it’s real strength. So, let’s talk about it.

Before I dive in and talk about time under tension, get your 7-day FREE trial to experience the Mothr Method here. What Is Time Under Tension?

Time under tension, or TUT, is how long your muscle is actively working during a set.

  • Not how heavy the weight is.
  • Not how fast you finish.
  • Just how long the muscle stays engaged.

Research shows that keeping a muscle working for about 30 to 60 seconds can help build strength and endurance, even with lighter weights.

Why It Works So Well in Pilates

When done properly, it keeps your muscles working longer without relying on heavy weights.

  • Slow tempo keeps movements controlled.
  • Higher reps extend the time your muscles stay active.
  • Minimal rest keeps the tension going. This is the goal.
  • Add ankle weights, pulses, or isometric holds, and the intensity increases quickly.
  • Your muscles do not get a break & that’s the point.

You Don’t Need Heavy Weights

Muscle change comes from tension, not just load.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions in fitness. You can lift heavy, but if your muscles are not under tension long enough, the effect is limited.

Pilates uses control, range, and duration to keep muscles engaged.

This creates strength while reducing stress on your joints.

You feel the work without needing to lift heavy.

Compound vs Isolation in Pilates

Both matter, but they are not the same.

Isolation exercises target one area at a time. Think of a movement like a teaser that focuses on the core.

Compound movements do more. They combine multiple muscle groups at once.

Core, glutes, shoulders, legs working together.

This increases total muscle recruitment. It also makes your workouts more efficient.

The MOTHR Method leans into compound, full-body flows. More strength across the entire body.

What This Means for Your Results

When your muscles stay under tension longer, they have to work harder.

They fatigue. More muscle fibers join the effort. That is where change starts to happen.

This is how you build:

  • A stronger core

  • Lifted glutes

  • Athletic arms

  • Better posture

  • A body that feels capable

Not by rushing through reps. This is when you experience The Mothr Method.
